Chart: Travel to London to Meet Sister?

Mothers: Caput, Rubeus, Acquisitio, Amissio

Olabode has asked us to look at this FICTIONAL chart to evaluate the effect of subradiation on the house of the quesited.

The fictional querent's question is: Will I be able to travel to London to meet my sister?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sakura has given us an excellent interpretation of this chart, as follows:

I was thinking “well, shouldn’t the perfection be with house 9 since you are traveling ? Or should it be with house 3 since you are going to see your sister ?” And I realized, it’s with house 3. Yes, you would PRIMARILY travel to see her, so we might think it’s house 9, but THE END GOAL is seeing her, so it would be house 3, because if you can’t see her, there is no point to your travel, and if there is no perfection between you and house 3, then you would automatically not travel to see her, which would not necessarily be the case with house 9.

So we look for a perfection with house 3.

There is no perfection. You won’t see her. Why ? Well, while a perfection with house 9 is not necessary for you to see her, it is for you to travel there, and there IS a perfection with house 9 and you. So it’s not that you can’t go, it’s most likely because your sister won’t be able to see/receive you :

1. She is under subradiation

2. Her house (house 6) is under subradiation too, so she might not be able to receive you (it might also be your health, but you are CAPUT so I didn’t take that possibility as a primary reason why)

3. She has amissio in her house 2 which joins with what I said in the previous point + in jumps to house 8 to form an INCONJUCTION with you.

I think that’s the correct way to read this chart.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I quite agree with Sakura that we need to focus solely on perfection between House 1, the Q, and House 3, his sister.

Q: House 1: CAPUT
Sister: House 3: ACQUISITIO

We have no perfection between these two houses, so the answer is no, the Q will not see his sister.

CAPUT in House 1 is in CAPITAL COMPANY with RUBEUS in House 2, giving a reception of FORTUNA MAJOR. And that is also the Figure in House 9 that subradiates House 3 by opposition. FORTUNA MAJOR also jumps to House 12, showing that Q, himself has done something that will prevent the perfection.

ACQUISITIO, the sister, in House 3, is in REVERSE COMPANY with AMISSIO, giving a reception of VIA. Hmmmm....might the sister, herself, be traveling away from her London home at the time when Q expected to visit? Let's see. The sister's turned House 9 is radical House 11. What's in House 11? VIA. My conclusion is that Q will not see his sister in London because she, herself, will be away from London at the time. FORTUNA MAJOR jumping from House 9 to House 12 says to me that Q had settled on a certain plan in his mind---perhaps with respect to dates of a visit to London---before checking with his sister that she would be available.

He can still travel to London if he wants (FORTUNA MAJOR in HOUSE 9 jumps to PERFECT with HOUSE by CONJUNCTION), but his sister won't be there when he get there (Acquisitio + Amission = Via, and Via is in the sister's turned House 9).

Two Witnesses, both Fortuna Minor: Q will have missed the window of opportunity to visit.
Judge: Populus: the outcome is owing to other people -- his sister, for one. Via also jumps the sister's turned house 8: she is worried about someone, and that is why she is travelling to go see that person.

END

comments

Inquiry: Missing Child

We have had an inquiry about what house to assign to a child who is missing. Should we take HOUSE 7 inasmuch as the child may be a stranger to the Querent? Or should we take HOUSE 11, as the turned 5th House from the 7th, showing the child of a stranger?

The answer is to take HOUSE 7 to represent the missing child. Sometimes, however, VIA will show up in the chart as the general significator of a missing person. One should also pay attention to the 4th House and 10th House from the 7th, to show, respectively, the father and the mother of the missing child. Oftentimes, the father or mother is involved in the child's disappearance.

comments

Questions on Planetary Company

Dear Olabode,

>> Can Caput Draconis have a planetary company with Via? Because it is a Moon North Node.

No, not planetary company. Caput Draconis is of the nature of Jupiter and Venus. It expands and blesses. Via is of the nature of the Moon, the waning Moon even. So, there is no planetary company.

Occasionally, however, the figures of the Moon (Via, Populus) and the Nodes (Caput and Cauda Draconis) can be related in a reading. For instance, let us say that a woman asks whether she is pregnant. Populus appears in House 1, and Cauda Draconis appears in House 5. The answer is that she is pregnant, but that she will miscarry. Here, the presence of the South Node in House 5 is very bad, and it causes miscarriage (as opposed to simply difficulty) because of its lunar connection. The same analysis can apply to other things where the Moon has natural rulership, such as a Mother, a Wife, a Queen, the Fishing Industry, a Sailor, a Cabbage Crop, Silver, etc.

>> Can Caput Draconis have a planetary company with ACQUISITIO (Jupiter) or AMISSIO (Venus).

No. The figures of the Nodes are not planets, so they cannot have planetary company. A planet reflects the light of the Sun. A Node is simply a mathematical point where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun, so a Node cannot reflect light.

We describe the Nodes of the "nature of Jupiter and Venus" or the "nature of Saturn and Mars" as kind of short-hand usage. They are important in this context in benefaction and besiegement. Caput blesses in benefaction because of its nature; Cauda disrupts in besiegement because of its nature.

comments

Inquiry: Geomancy Figures and Astrological Aspects

From Olabode:

>> Where I study astrology, the 6th house is used ,among other things, for weather forecast.

Magister: I have never heard of this.

>> Secondly, the geomantic figures with their correspondent planets are tally with what you gave us in 8 out of 16.
1- Caput D is assigned to PLUTO
2- Conjunctio is assigned to SATURN square.
3- Rubeus is assigned to URANUS.
4- Amissio to JUPITER Square.
5- Puer to VENUS square.
6- Latitia to MARS trine.
7- Tristitia to MARS square.
8- Cauda D to NEPTUNE.

Magister: I have also never heard of this. Traditional Geomancy does not use the outer planets of Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto.

In traditional astrology, five main aspects are used:

The Conjunction
The Sextile
The Square
The Trine
The Opposition

Each of these aspects has a planetary correspondence.

The CONJUNCTION is like Mercury. It can be good or bad.

The SEXTILE is like Venus, the Lesser Benefic. It is good.

The SQUARE is like Mars, the Lesser Benefic. It is bad.

The TRINE is like Jupiter, the Greater Benefic. It is very good.

The OPPOSITION is like Saturn, the Lesser Benefic. It is very bad.

This can be extended to Geomancy Figures.

If the CONJUNCTION is between two dignified planets, it will act like ALBUS. If the CONJUNCTION is between two ill-dignified planets, it will act like CONJUNCTIO. If the two planets have varying dignity, which figure the conjunction will act like depends on which planet has greater strength by placement.

And so on through the rest of list.

The same for the SEXTILE. Two dignified planets: Like PUELLA. Two ill-dignified planets: Like AMISSIO. Mixed: It depends on strength by placement.

The same for the SQUARE. Two dignified planets: Like PUER. Two ill-dignified planets: Like RUBEUS. Mixed: It depends on strength by placement.

The same for the TRINE. Two dignified planets: Like LAETITIA. Two ill-dignified planets: Like ACQUISITIO. Mixed: It depends on strength by placement.

The same for the OPPOSITION. Two dignified planets: Like CARCER. Two ill-dignified planets: Like TRISTITIA. Mixed: It depends on strength by placement.

comments

Chart: Get Job?

I received by email today the above image.

The email had the subject heading: Will I get this job that I applied for?

The Querent, Kunumbu, cast the chart for himself. The job involves "teaching service board; the portal is already opened by the government."

Here is my rendition of the chart:

Kunumbu's analysis is: "Yes, I will get the job because of the translation by Acquisitio. There is also reception of Conjunctio between Caput and Tristitia. In the Arabic method, there is ittisal but no infisal. That means I will get it."

Olabode asked: "There is ittisal for which figure?"

Kunubmu responded: "Ittisal of the ascendant (House 1) is Acquisitio and the infisal is Conjunctio."

Olabode asked in reply: "Hello Kanumbu! Do you have a text\book that teaches ittisal, infisal, nasari and nutuqi, respectively?"

comments

Sporting Event Chart: World Cup 2022: Ghana vs Portugal

A quick and easy chart.

FACTS: The Geomancer was the Querent. He asked whether Ghana would win its match against Portugal in the World Cup yesterday.

GEOMANCER ANALYSIS: Ghana in House 1 had a CONJUNCTION with the figure of House 10, PUER, which jumped to House 2. Portugal, in House 7, had perfection only by TRANSLATION with House 10 (ACQUISITIO in HOUSES 8 and 9). Ghana also had better reception with House 10 than Portugal. Because CONJUNCTION is stronger than TRANSLATION, the Geomancer thought it was very clear from the chart that Ghana would win, and was very surprised when Ghana did not.

He wrote to me asking for an explanation inasmuch as, according to my instruction, Ghana should have won. I respectfully dissent.

MAGISTER's CLARIFYING QUESTIONS:

(1) There are two significant rules operating here on HOUSE 7 that the Geomancer has ignored. What are they? If you need a hint, look at the tags of this post.

(2) Both rules are very helpful for Portugal. Which of the two rules is utterly destructive for Ghana?

Thus my judgment.

comments

Kickstarter For Arabic Geomancy Dice

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/geomantia/geomantia

Someone brought this to my attention, and so I pass it on to you.

I, myself, am not interested in the project. I do not like ornate or gauche things. The project creator feels that the heavenliness of our art should be reflected in our tools. I am not of that opinion. Geomancy is the art of mirroring celestial forces to Earth in such a way that we can perceive and read them. The Heavenly and Terrestrial Spheres already exist in perfect mirroring. Therefore, it must be the hand and heart and mind of man that allows the operation to work. If you have correct knowledge of the art, clean hands, and a pure heart, the Holy Mother will tell you everything plainly, even if your tools are a dead stick and a patch of dirt. On the contrary, if you had no teacher, if you cannot bother to wash your hands, or if your motivation is not pure, you will not hear the Holy Mother correctly, no matter if you have raml dice of brass, ink tinged with silver, and etching tablets of gold. The glitter of your tools will likely confound your judgment.

To be honest, I am amazed that I have to explain basic principles like this. I would never even seek a reading from the project creator. Can a mind so engrossed and impressed with materialism read the Letters of Heaven? I would not think so. If he were my student, I would confine him to a dead stick and a patch of dirt until his accuracy was established beyond question. Then I would let him use whatever he wanted.

Around the world, there are children without food or a safe place to sleep; women are dying in childbirth from lack of basic medical necessities; thousands of lonely, elderly people died in Paris in the French Heatwave of 2003, while the morally corrupt paraded in their haute couture. Think about those things before you decide you need planetary candles etched with gold ink, silver peacocking candles, dice made of brass, and so on.

For real: The Holy Mother will literally give you this art for the price of dirt.

comments

Elizabethan Woman: Husband Honored?

An image of Foreman's original chart from his notebook.

I will do this historical chart next, after I post the redrawn chart. It is from Aemilia Bassano, an Elizabethan woman, then 27 or 28 years old, born into a family of musicians and whose husband, Alphonso Lanier, was a musician (flute player) at the court of Elizabeth I. The geomancer was Simon Forman, a well known geomancer/astrologer/physician then practicing in London, and the date was 2 September 1597. The Q's husband was absent from London at the time, on a campaign with Robert Devereux, the second Earl of Essex, to capture the Azores Islands from Spain, amongst other things. It is a well known naval campaign, which you can read about here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islands_Voyage

A portrait miniature of the Querent has survived:

Aemilia Bassano, painted by Nicholas Hilliard, artist famous for his miniatures of members of the court of Elizabeth I.

We must be very careful judging charts from Elizabethan London. The geomancer or astrologer often did not probe the Querent carefully in order to determine what the real question was. This chart, in fact, should be judged as a war/battle chart, and not as a chart of bestowal of honor. If you read it as the former, the chart is extremely clear, and you will get it right. If you read it as the latter, you will get it wrong.

Mr. Forman's Geomancy Chart, Redrawn

Mr. Forman got the chart wrong, by the way. He read the chart as a bestowal of honor on Aemilia's husband, Alphonso Lanier.

(1) You can tell from the chart that Aemilia always had two things uppermost in her mind her entire life. She was in constant fear of losing those things. What were they?

(2) In pursuit of those two things, Aemilia had in mind that, if her husband returned successfully from the naval campaign, then perhaps Alphonso would be knighted and given a title from the Queen. This is what prompted her question to Mr. Forman. And Mr. Forman told her "Yes, honor of knighthood would be bestowed on your husband." What is the main testimony in the chart for that statement?

(3) What Aemilia's question improperly assumes is that England will succeed in the naval campaign. And Mr. Forman fails to investigate that first, as he should have. Indeed, if the naval campaign came back unsuccessful, there is absolutely no way that Queen Elizabeth was going to reward everyone for their service. Even if the naval campaign came back successful, there is no guarantee that Queen Elizabeth would have doled out land and titles and gold to the successful naval officers.

(4) So, don't make the same mistake as Mr. Forman. Judge first whether the English will be successful against Spain in the naval campaign. Will they? If England prevails, then you can look at whether Alphonso will be rewarded with honor by the Queen.

a. What HOUSE and FIGURE will be for Aemelia and England? Any COMPANY? How did England feel about its chances against Spain? Confident, or willing to take risks?

b. What HOUSE and FIGURE will be for Spain? Any COMPANY? What else is very notable about Spain's HOUSE?

c. Did the two sides actually meet? What is the testimony for your answer?

d. Whereunto did England's figure jump? To what house? What are some of the meanings of that house? Was England justified in its earlier confidence?

e. What HOUSE and FIGURE would represent the Azores? Is there any persuasive evidence in the chart that England will take the Azores?

f. Take a look at the witnesses and judge. Who prevailed in the campaign?

g. Was Queen Elizabeth pleased with the result? Do you think she rewarded the naval officers for their efforts?

Now you know the real story.

The lesson here is to avoid as much as possible questions that have an assumption built into them. Otherwise, you are very likely to err.

Here are some modern examples:

A. "Will I get the job?" Has the Querent applied for the job? If not, don't take the question.

B. "Will I sell my house?" Has the Querent put the house up for sale? If not, don't take the question.

C. "Will I win the gold medal in Olympics for gymnastics?" Has the Querent ever trained in gymnastics? Has the Querent made the Olympic team? If not, don't take the question.

Keep in mind that the above questions are prematurely seeking a declaration of a future event, and that is why they are improper. A condition to the fulfillment of that future event has not been satisfied.

On the other hand, we CAN take "should" type questions, or "what will happen if?" type questions.

"I'm concerned about crime. Should I stay in the city or move to the country?"
"Will I eventually make more money in the future if I leave my job and get an engineering degree?""
"Should I study nursing or physical therapy? Which field is more lucrative and/or personally rewarding for me?

CHART RESULT: Aemelia was one of those unfortunate girls who was introduced to Elizabeth's court when a teenager, basically as sexual amusement for one of the nobles. After she was accidentally impregnated by said Mr. Noble, he bought her off and broke off the affair. She was married to a cousin, Alphonso, the flutist at Court, so she still had a connection to the Court and nobility. She hadn't realized, though, that no one had any further use for her. Her marriage to Alphonso was not a happy one. She was constantly in fear of losing both money (Amissio in House 2) and her status in court (Amissio in House 10). Most of her money was spent away by her and Alphonso. The Queen died in 1603 (Alphonso played in her funeral procession), and then Alphonso died in 1613. Aemelia never recovered any status at court . . . she was just one of many "has beens" . . . and she was constantly grubbing for money one way or another (writing poetry, opening a school), mostly unsuccessfully.

England was very confident (PUER in COMPANY with AMISSIO, yielding a reception of CAPUT) in their Islands Voyage campaign, and who knows what kind of unrealistic boasts Essex and Raleigh made to the Queen. In the space of a single summer in 1597, Spain---wondrously strong (House 7 in Planetary Company, giving PUER as reception figure, with House 7 under benefaction)---basically handed England its arse, inflicting enormous losses on the English navy. Not a single goal of the expedition was achieved. The Queen was greatly displeased, and she was in no mood to dole out titles for a grievous failure.

Inquiry: The Order and the Cycle of the Elements

An inquiry from Olabode from May 2022.

QUESTIONS: (1) Which one is the most powerful ELEMENT: Fire, Air, Water, or Earth? (2) Which one is the leading element? And which one is in second, third, and fourth positions?

I will start with your second question, first. It both the Western and Eastern occult traditions, the Four Elements are said to come into manifestation from Spirit in a certain order, as follows:

(0) Spirit ---> (1) Air ---> (2) Fire ---> (3) Water ---> (4) Earth

There is a certain diagram that we use to represent this:

THE TALISMAN OF CREATION

The pointed oval is Spirit. The circle is Air. The triangle is Fire. The crescent is Water. The square is Earth.

As for your second question, no element is more powerful than any other. Once Spirit establishes the four elements in manifestation per the above order, the four elements all exist together in a cycle of transformation, per the following diagram, which is still used in traditional medicine. You can see that the cycle does not preserve the same order in which the four elements are created or come into manifestation. In the Cycle of the Elements, we have this order:

Air ---> Fire ---> Earth ---> Water, all of which revolve around Spirit:

THE CYCLE OF THE ELEMENTS

I hope that this helps your understanding.

comments

Chart: Shall He Be Affected by the Curse?

This chart is contributed by one of our geomancers here.

FACTS: A woman disclosed to the Geomancer that she had put a curse on a man who had treated the woman very, very badly, altering the woman's life permanently for the worse. Out of curiosity, the Geomancer asked whether the woman's curse would have any effect on the man.

Although the Geomancer stated that she was not sure of the analysis, I think she did a remarkably fine job. I have added the chart here to clarify only a couple of points.

THE MAN: As an "other person" with respect to Geomancer (the Querent), the Man in question would be in HOUSE 7, PUER. The Geomancer noted that PUER fit the Man very well by temperament and profession.

THE CURSING WOMAN: We do not need a significator for the Cursing Woman, as we really only want to know whether her curse was effective.

THE CURSE: A curse on the Man is going to be the TURNED HOUSE 12 from HOUSE 7, or RADICAL HOUSE 6. There we find the figure CARCER, which is a good figure to signify a curse, as the figure of restriction, limitation, locking up, setbacks, and so on.

PERFECTION?: We have no perfection by our usual four modes, OCCUPATION, CONJUNCTION, MUTATION, TRANSLATION.

JUMPING AND ASPECT: But, CARCER jumps to HOUSE 11, and forms a TRINE aspect with HOUSE 7. The reception between the two figures is PUER + CARCER = RUBEUS, the figure of anger, jealousy, danger and violence. This is enough to give a positive answer to the question.
In my judgment, the curse will most certainly affect the Man.

AREAS OF LIFE AFFECTED: The Geomancer indicated that she believed the curse would affect the Man through his TURNED HOUSE 5, which is to where the figure of CARCER jumped. And I agree. For instance, it may affect his love affairs, his fertility, his ability to enjoy himself, all of which are things ruled by the 5th house.

ANOTHER AREA: CARCER in HOUSE 11 (the Man's TURNED HOUSE 5) is in PLANETARY COMPANY with TRISTITIA in HOUSE 12 (the Man's TURNED HOUSE 6). Therefore, the curse might also affect his HEALTH, which is governed by HOUSE 6. What parts of the Man's body? Since the main significator of the curse is in TURNED HOUSE 5, I would go with body parts ruled by HOUSE 5: heart problems, liver problems, stomach problems, or back problems.

STRENGTH OF THE CURSE: The curse is very strong, with a lot of power behind it. TRISTITIA as a SATURN figure, has its JOY in HOUSE 12, and it will feed that strength to CARCER in HOUSE 11 because of the PLANETARY COMPANY.

AN INTERESTING NOTE: Note that the chart is being very clear here about the curse potentially affecting the Man's health. If CARCER had jumped directly from HOUSE 6 to HOUSE 12, no aspect would be formed with HOUSE 7 (HOUSES 7 and 12 are INCONJUNCT), and we would have no perfection at all. Here, however, the chart chose to indicate the possibility of affecting his health by putting CARCER in HOUSE 11, and then TRISTITIA, the figure of PLANETARY COMPANY in HOUSE 12.

THE WITNESSES AND JUDGE: You might be slightly uncertain at this combination of WITNESSES and JUDGE. We have two relatively good witnesses -- ALBUS and LAETITIA -- and then an evil JUDGE for the context of the question. The solution here is that ALBUS is a MERCURY figure, and LAETITIA is a JUPITER figure. If you know your planetary dignities, you know that MERCURY and JUPITER are opposites. What MERCURY loves, JUPITER will hate, and JUPITER loves, MERCURY will hate. This is because Mercury and Jupiter rule opposite zodiac signs. Gemini versus Sagittarius. Virgo versus Pisces. So, the two witnesses here actually indicate an enemy or conflicting vibration. AMISSIO, the figure of LOSS, therefore makes sense. For, in reality, no one wins in a cursing situation. Everyone loses.

That is my judgment.

comments

Inquiry: Uranus and Neptune

We have received the following inquiry:

What are URANUS and NEPTUNE in relation to the other 7 planets? Are they the North Node and South Node of the moon?

Uranus and Neptune are two of the "outer planets," that is, beyond the orbit of Saturn. They are not used in Geomancy, and they have no correspondence to the North and South Nodes of the Moon (CAPUT DRACONIS and CAUDA DRACONIS, respectively, in Geomancy).

Uranus and Neptune, along with Pluto, are used in Western Astrology. In horary astrology, they play a minor role, and they are treated like FIXED STARS (like ALDEBARAN, PROCYON, ANTARES, REGULUS, etc.). In natal astrology, they are likewise treated like fixed stars, but they usually play a greater role. In mundane astrology, they are also treated like fixed stars, and they can play a greater role than they do even in natal astrology. All three -- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto -- play no role in Geomancy, and you should be extremely skeptical of anyone who says otherwise. Ask for determinative and conclusive proof.

In astrology, the nature of the outer planets is, briefly, this:

URANUS: general disruption, divorce, unrealistic ideas or expectations, something negative or sudden that later gives birth to beauty or love.

NEPTUNE: things associated with water, delusion and deceit (including self-delusion and self-deceit), earth-shaking problems.

PLUTO: things associated with basements, lockdowns, underground, vehicles, elopement, kidnapping, serious commitments, claustrophobia.

The North and South Nodes are different things altogether. In the diagram above, you see the blue sphere of Earth tilted on its access. The YELLOW LINE is labelled THE ECLIPTIC. This is the apparent path of the Sun as it moves around the Earth, that is, the line of the SOLAR ORBIT. The RED LINE is labelled the LUNAR ORBIT. You will see that it does not exactly correspond to the YELLOW LINE OF THE SOLAR ORBIT, but is different by about 5 degrees.

On the diagram you will see the phrase ASCENDING NODE. This is the North Node, where the MOON, moving upward, crosses the path of the SOLAR ORBIT. On the other side, you see the DESCENDING NODE, where the MOON, moving downward, crosses the path of the SOLAR ORBIT again. This is the South Node.

The North Node is of the nature of JUPITER and VENUS, the Greater and Lesser Benefics. It brings good fortune, expansion, freedom, increase. In Geomancy, it is symbolized by the figure CAPUT DRACONIS. Amongst the planets, Jupiter is the element AIR, and Venus is the element WATER. Therefore, CAPUT DRACONIS is associated with AIR and WATER, too.

The South Node is of the nature of SATURN and MARS, the Greater and Lesser Malefics. It brings bad fortune, limitation, restriction, decrease. In Geomancy, it is symbolized by the Figure CAUDA DRACONIS. Amongst the planets, Saturn is the element EARTH, and Mars is the element FIRE. Therefore, CAUDA DRACONIS is associated with EARTH and FIRE, too.

comments

Chart: Cheating Girlfriend?

A member has asked my opinion on the following chart.

FACTS: The male Q and his girlfriend live in a conservative country. In 2017, they were both virgins. The male Q suspects that, in 2017, his girlfriend was cheating on him. Was she? The question is: "Did my girlfriend cheat on me in 2017?"

There are essentially five major testimonies that the answer is NO, she did not cheat on the querent in 2017.

What figures represent Q boyfriend and Ms. Girlfriend? What do you think of Ms. Girlfriend's figure? Is it good in the house in which she appears?

What else is going on with Ms. Girlfriend's house to emphasize her goodness?

Is there PERFECTION between the houses of Q and Ms. Girlfriend? What do you think of the third figure involved? Good, bad, indifferent?

If Ms. Girlfriend had a secret that she was keeping---such as cheating on Q---which TURNED HOUSE would you assign to that secret? Look around the chart. How is the chart telling us with absolute certainty that Ms. Girlfriend was not keeping any such secret?

What do you think of the two Witnesses and the Judge?

Inquiry: Conjunctio as Death

Sakura has been reviewing the death charts posted on this site, and he has noticed that Conjunctio is often the significator of Death in the charts. He asks why this should be so?

In the symbolism of the Western occult tradition, Mercury/Hermes is the "Psychopompos," a Greek word literally meaning "the Guide of Souls." It is the power of Mercury that conducts the souls of the deceased to the Otherworld. Conjunctio, the figure of Meeting, connects the World Above to the World Below, as you can see in its dotted symbolism.

Inquiry: Discrepancies Between Astrology and Geomancy

A recent inquiry:

>> Hello sir, I don't know astrology. Please explain the planets and the nodes in relation to Geomancy. For instance, Astrology tells us that SATURN is a planet good for knowledge. Saturn corresponds to TRISTITIA, so presumably TRISTITIA is also good for knowledge, despite being a bad figure.

No planet and no figure is really all bad. They are good for some things, and bad for other things. We see this continually in the practice of astrology. A planet that is strong and in good condition -- for instance, Jupiter exalted in Cancer in an angle -- can still cause great harm if it is the significator of a disease.

This is perhaps easier to see in astrology than it is in geomancy, primarily because Geomancy may take one planet and assign two "bad" figures to it, and take another planet and assign two "good" figures to it. For instance:

Saturn: CARCER and TRISTITIA, both "bad."

Jupiter: ACQUISITIO and LAETITIA, both "good."

Really, however, the figures of SATURN just show two types of pressure or restriction -- downward pressure, like gravity (TRISTITIA) and constrictive pressure, like strangulation (CARCER). Likewise, the two figures of JUPITER just show two types of expansion: material or mental expansion (ACQUISITIO), and emotional expansion (LAETITIA).

If you are asking about natural rulerships, you can see many natural rulerships of the PLANETS in the post: REFERENCE: PLANETS.

If you are asking about natural ruelrships of the GEOMANCY FIGURES, we mention them here and there in our posts, but there is not yet a specific post about it. We will start such a post in the future.

comments

Inquiry: Collection as Weaker Perfection?

Sakura asks whether Collection of Light could be characterized as a "weaker" form of perfection than CONJUNCTION, OCCUPATION, MUTATION, or TRANSLATION.

It is an excellent question and gives me an opportunity to clarify something.

MAGISTER ANSWERS: No. It is as strong as TRANSLATION, I would say. TRANSLATION can involve a third-party or outside factor bringing about perfection of the matter. The only difference is that COLLECTION may also involve a change of circumstances BEFORE the third-party gets involved and perfects the matter.

I have added that fact to REFERENCE: COLLECTION OF LIGHT.

Inquiry: My Method of Casting Charts

Sakura asks what is my preferred way of casting charts.

I use wands, pictured above. The set on the left is a set of geomancy wands I made 37 years ago, at the age of 15. I used them exclusively for many years. I threw them one at a time and noted the result of the toss before I tossed the next, and the third, and the final one.

The set on the right is a set of geomancy wands I commissioned from an artist in Canada last year. I have also used them frequently over the course of a year. They can be tossed all at once because they are marked with head, neck, body, and feet.

I also have frequently used a set of dice in four colors -- red, yellow, blue, and green. The number on the red die (Fire), even or odd, gives me the head of the figure. The number on the yellow die (Air), even or odd, gives me the neck of the figure. The blue die (Water) gives me the body. The green die (Earth) gives me the feet. I toss them four times.

A chart can be generated in any binary way. A coin can be tossed 16 times. Dice can be used. Playing cards can be drawn. Pebbles can be pulled out of a bag and counted.

My preferred method is the geomancy wands.

comments

Chart: Book Worth Buying?

This chart is contributed by Olabode.

FACTS: The Querent is interested in buying a book on Arabic Geomancy. Before buying the book, he wants to know whether the book is "worth buying"? This is a little bit ambiguous. What is "worth" mean to the Querent. Is learning one or two bits of new information "worth" the price? Or does he need to learn 100 or a 1000 bits of new information to make it "worth" the price? We don't know. But we will give the chart a try.

OLABODE: Olabode wonders whether the book is HOUSE 9 and CAPUT indicating a good book. He notes, however, that the benefits flowing from the book would be the next house over, HOUSE 10, which is CAUDA, not a great figure. He notes, however, that CAUDA in HOUSE 10 is under BENEFACTION. So, now he is confused in his judgment. Should he buy the book or not?

I think some study questions will sort this out. There are a couple of ways to approach this chart.

(1) What HOUSE belongs to a SKILLED PERSON or PERSON WITH SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE? Is this a good person or a bad person in general?

(2) If we want to gauge the QUALITY or QUANTITY of that SKILLED PERSON's KNOWLEDGE, where do we look -- what HOUSE? What figure is in that house? Does he have good knowledge or poor knowledge in general?

(3) Go back to the HOUSE of question (1). How are this skilled person's PRESENT FINANCES? Good or bad? Are his finances going to improve? How do you know?

(4) Go back to the HOUSE of question (2). You have found the HOUSE of the PERSON's KNOWLEDGE. What HOUSE represents the PROFIT FROM THAT KNOWLEDGE? What FIGURE is in that HOUSE? Where else do you see that same figure in your judgment? Is this a good sign or bad sign?

(5) Look at the RECEPTIONS between HOUSES 1 and 5, and HOUSES 1 and 6. Are they good, bad, indifferent?

(6) As a SECONDARY or SUBSIDIARY consideration, we can look at HOUSE representing a house of Q's prospective possessions. Is this book going to be a prized possession based on the FIGURE in that HOUSE?

(7) Come to judgment.

Magister's Brief Analysis

( Brief Analysis )

Inquiry: Queen of Heaven

The inquiry essentially is: Why do I refer to the Queen of Heaven as the patroness of our Art?

Mainly because I am a person of a devotional bent. Other people may depersonalize the spiritual mechanism of our Art, or think of that mechanism purely in terms of celestial mechanics.

I think of the Sphere of the Fixed Stars as being the Great Adam, the Great Macrocosmic Man. The Fixed Stars include all of the sidereal constellations that are associated with the signs of the Zodiac. In my own mind, I think of this entity as the King of Stars.

The sidereal constellations are NOT the same as the signs of the Zodiac, although we call the signs of the Zodiac by the same names as twelve of those constellations. The sidereal constellations are uneven divisions of the Heavens. Some are larger than others. The signs of the Zodiac, however, are 12 equal divisions of the Heavens, 30 degrees each.

These signs of the Zodiac I associate with the Celestial Eve, the Mother of All Life. Note that the word "Zodiac" comes from the Greek ZOIDIAKOS KYKLOS, meaning the "Circle of Little Creatures." Note, too, that almost all of the Zodiac signs are symbolized by a living creature -- all accept Libra, the Scales. In ancient times, Libra was known as the Scorpion's Claws.

In any event, it is the Planets moving through the Zodiac Signs that largely govern life on Earth. It is true that the fixed stars also have their influence on individual lives and on nations and empires and dynasties, but Geomancy does not use them. Geomancy does use the Signs and Planets, however. And it is the motion of the Planets through the Signs that govern our hands to cast our charts.

Almost every religious tradition has some kind of Queen of Heaven figure. Perhaps a Christian would consider Her to be Mary. The ancient Gnostics called Her the Celestial Hecate. She was Asherah or Ishtar in ancient Middle Eastern countries, Isis or Nut in ancient Egypt, and so on.

If one's religious tradition does not have a Queen of Heaven figure, but has any God-figure, one may substitute that, instead. One could even discard the whole notion altogether, and just think of the Universe as a wonderful place wherein we can actually practice Geomancy, based on laws and principles that modern science does not yet understand.

All of that said, I do think it is helpful in any form of divination to acknowledge SOMETHING higher than oneself, in order to keep oneself humble. Praying to a Higher Power for wisdom, knowledge, discernment, and good judgment is useful.

For me, with Geomancy and Astrology, that Higher Power is the Queen of Heaven. For others, the Higher Power might be Isis or Allah or Jesus or God or, perhaps, the Universe, itself.

comments

Inquiry: Academic Study?

A very general inquiry:

>> Why can't we have this Knowledge (Western/Arabic Geomancy) as a course of study in Universities. Like IFA oracle under African Religious study in Harvard University?

It is likely a cultural thing. Esoteric knowledge is not very well incorporated into the Western mindset. Astrology was once taught in European universities hundreds of years ago, mostly as an adjunct to astronomy and medical practice. It does not surprise me that Ifa is being taught at Harvard as part of African Religious studies.

If anything were to be taught in Western universities, I would advocate that it be traditional astrology, starting with horary astrology, then moving to electional astrology, then natal astrolgy, then mundane astrology, along with the miscellaneous areas of knowledge that comes under mundane astrology, such as comets and weather prediction. In that instance, Geomancy could be a sub-unit under horary astrology.

I teach horary astrology, myself, but typically take only one or two students at a time. In my view, it is a preferred divination method because it is based directly on the movement of the planets. Geomancy is more secondary, as we allow the movement of the planets to influence the movements of our hands in order to cast the chart.

I hope that helps answer your question.

comments

Inquiry: 28 Lunar Mansions

The inquiry is: How do the 28 Lunar Mansions correspond to the Figures of Geomancy, and how are the Mansions used in Geomancy?

As I understand it, the Mansions of the Moon were developed in ancient China, somewhere before 500 B.C. to 200 B.C. The Zodiac was divided into 28 sections of 12 and 4/5 degrees each, and each section was called a Mansion. The meaning of each Mansion was keyed to a constellation or asterism or other fixed star or grouping of fixed stars within that Mansion. Just as the Sun had 12 signs through which it passed during a solar year, the Moon had 28 mansions through which it passed during a lunar month.

Unfortunately, because the fixed stars move at a rate of about ONE DEGREE every 72 YEARS, the original meaning of each Mansion is no longer keyed to the proper fixed stars. This makes the idea of the Mansions fairly useless even in natal astrology. It is far better to analyze a chart within the context of the fixed stars than the Mansions.

We do not use fixed stars in Geomancy. Therefore, there is no use for the 28 Mansions in Geomancy. I have never seen a chart interpretation where they were used. My advice is to ignore them in both geomancy and astrology.

comments

Chart: Timing of Birth

This chart is contributed by Sakura.

FACTS: Q’s sister was pregnant. The doctor told the sister that she would deliver the baby around November or December. Q cast the chart, asking: “How many days until my sister delivers her baby?” He asked the question and cast the chart on September 15th.

(1) What HOUSE and FIGURE belong to the Q’s SISTER?

(2) What HOUSE and FIGURE belong to Q’s SISTER’s CHILD?

(3) Just because Q’s sister is pregnant does not mean that she will give birth. Women have miscarriages, after all, and other accidents can occur. How do we know from this chart that Q’s SISTER will give birth to the CHILD?

(4) A general rule is to take timing from the figure of the QUESITED, here the CHILD is HOUSE 7. The figure is AMISSIO, which has the number 6. But, Q has asked about DAYS, so that can’t be right in the context of our FACTS. Even if the timing unit were different, AMISSIO doesn’t make sense as 6 weeks (which would bring us only to November 1) or 6 months (which is far too long for the context of the question). What should we do instead? Sakura correctly suggested combining the SISTER and the CHILD. After all, the birth of the child is going to depend on BOTH mother and child, anyway. What do we get combining AMISSIO and CAPUT?

(5) You now have your timing figure. There are two other features of the chart whereby the Holy Mother is trying to tell you that you are on the right track with that figure. What are the two other features?

(6) Our timing figure has a LESSER NUMBER of 79 and a GREATER NUMBER of 120. Which will we choose?

(7) What date will the sister give birth?

———————————————————————————————————-

Inquiry: Numerology and Geomancy

We have received an inquiry on another divinatory system:

>> What is your opinion/understanding on NUMEROLOGY? What about NUMEROLOGY's relationship to GEOMANCY?

There are several systems of numerology in use in the modern day. Pythagorean is a very popular method, followed by the Chaldean method. Both have only very broad predictive value, although numerologists in both systems appear to have developed methods to answer questions, too. Numerology is very popular in India, although, again, I think the predictive value is still very broad.

If you are interested in investigating NUMEROLOGY, the books I have liked the best include:

Pythagorean Numerology:

THE NUMBERS OF LIFE by Kevin Quinn Avery
GLYNIS HAS YOUR NUMBER by Glynis McCants
HELPING YOURSELF WITH NUMEROLOGY by Helyn Hitchcock
SECRETS OF NUMBEROLOGY by Dr. Ravindra Kumar and Dr. Manoj Kumar
YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED by Florence Campbell

---------------------------------------------

Chaldean Numerology:

5 NUMBERS OF DESTINY by Anmarie Uber
CHEIRO'S BOOK OF NUMBERS by Cheiro

---------------------------------------------

Indian/Vedic Numerology:

NUMEROLOGY: WITH TANTRA, AYURVEDA, AND ASTROLOGY by Harish Johari
MY FORTUNE: THE MYSTIC KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS THROUGH NUMEROLOGY by Guruswamy Sethuraman
SCIENCE OF FORTUNE by Pandit Sethuraman (father of the author of the book just above)

---------------------------------------------

House Numbers:
THE POWER OF HOME NUMBERS by Jesse Kalsi: I really enjoyed this book. It is largely based on the Indian/Vedic system. It is not terribly instructive, but very anecdotal, with lots of good stories. You might be able to learn a few things by "reading between the lines."

---------------------------------------------

There is some overlap between Chaldean and Indian/Vedic Numerology, I should note.

CONNECTION TO GEOMANCY: There is not much inherent connection between NUMEROLOGY and GEOMANCY. Numerology is sometimes used by practitioners of other divination systems in order to help time predictions. For instance, if you judge by Geomancy that a person may enter a new relationship this year, a numerological analysis could help you determine the month that prediction will happen (likely a personal month 2 or personal month 5).

PLANETARY CORRESPONDENCES:

Both the figures of GEOMANCY and the numbers of NUMEROLOGY have planetary correspondences. The planetary correspondences to numbers varies quite widely, depending on the author. These are the associations I have found most accurate. I'll also give the corresponding GEOMANCY figures.

1: The Sun: FORTUNA MAJOR
2: The Moon: POPULUS, CAPUT DRACONIS
3: Jupiter: ACQUISITIO and LAETITIA
4: The Sun (secondary), and Uranus: FORTUNA MINOR
5: Mercury: ALBUS and CONJUNCTIO
6: Venus: AMISSIO and PUELLA
7: The Moon (secondary), Neptune: VIA, CAUDA DRACONIS
8: Saturn: CARCER and TRISTITIA
9: Mars: PUER and RUBEUS

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Sakura77 also provides us with this information on African Numerology in Geomancy:

In west African Geomancy each element is assigned a number. The elements are arranged in the same way as in other forms of geomancy : HEAD = FIRE, NECK = AIR, BELLY = WATER and FEET = EARTH (fun fact : Taoists devide the body in the four and elements and it’s exactly the same, funny how different regions developed similar beliefs, yes?)

If an element is active (1 point) it is assigned its number, but if it isn’t active (2 points) then we give it the number 0.

FIRE : 2
AIR : 7
WATER : 4
EARTH : 8

If a figure goes above 16, we take 16 out of it, and the result is its value. Therefore, we have figures from 1 to 15 and Populus is considered the natural ruler of house 16 instead of being given 0. This way for exemple, FORTUNA MINOR is 2+7+0+0= 9 and is considered to be the natural ruler of house 9, or as we call it “the theme while it sleeps”. VIA, with all its points active, is 2+7+4+8=21-16= 5 so it lives in house 5 while the theme is not active or “sleeping”

So instead of assigning each figure to its astrological house, we assign it to its number. This gives us :

HOUSE 1 : PUER
HOUSE 2 : LAETITIA
HOUSE 3 : CAPUT DRACONIS
HOUSE 4 : ALBUS
HOUSE 5 : VIA
HOUSE 6 : AMISSIO
HOUSE 7 : RUBEUS
HOUSE 8 : TRISTITIA
HOUSE 9 : FORTUNA MINOR
HOUSE 10 : CARCER
HOUSE 11 : CONJUNCTIO
HOUSE 12 : FORTUNA MAJOR
HOUSE 13 : CAPUT DRACONIS
HOUSE 14 : PUELLA
HOUSE 15 : ACQUISITIO
HOUSE 16 : POPULUS

I feel like this information could help with astrological geomancy, but I don’t know how yet - I did do some experiments trying to add this to tarot with very mild results.

comments

Inquiry: Figures as Retrograde Planets?

Another Inquiry: Some old and modern geomancy texts refer to certain figures as being the RETROGRADE status of their respective planets. Is this significant?

The answer is: I have never found it to be significant in interpreting a chart, and I believe it to be a mistaken correspondence that can be ignored. Which figures are retrograde vary a bit according to author. One list is that CONJUNCTIO/MERCURY, AMISSIO/VENUS, RUBEUS/MARS, LAETITIA/JUPITER, and CARCER/SATURN are the figures of RETROGRADE MOTION, while the other figures of those planets are DIRECT IN MOTION.

Retrograde motion in our cosmology has the sense of something moving backwards, against nature. I find it difficult to accept that 5 of our Geomancy figures represent forces running contrary to nature, especially when one of them is LAETITIA. Happiness and joy and good health are contrary to nature? I don't believe it.

What I think the old geomancers were trying to determine was the relative strength of the figures of the same planet. This can be discerned in another way, however. In astrological cosmology, EACH PLANET is either DIURNAL (DAY) or NOCTURNAL (NIGHT) by nature.

DIURNAL PLANETS: SUN, JUPITER, SATURN
NOCTURNAL PLANETS: MOON, VENUS, MARS
DEPENDS: MERCURY

Each planet also has a DAY ZODIAC SIGN and a NIGHT ZODIAC SIGN. The planets that are more DIURNAL by nature function better or are stronger in their DAY ZODIAC SIGNS than they do in their NIGHT ZODIAC SIGNS. The planets that are NOCTURNAL by nature function better or are stronger in their NIGHT ZODIAC SIGNS than they do in their DAY ZODIAC SIGNS.

This can be transferred over to Geomancy figures.

VENUS: Her day sign is Taurus. Her night sign is Libra. She is a nocturnal planet, and therefore prefers to be in Libra. Thus, PUELLA is stronger than AMISSIO.

MARS: His day sign is Aries. His night sign is Scorpio. He is a nocturnal planet, and therefore prefers to be in Scorpio. Thus, RUBEUS is stronger than PUER.

JUPITER: His day sign is Sagittarius. His night sign is Pisces. He is a diurnal planet, and therefore prefers to be in Sagittarius. Thus, ACQUISITIO is stronger than LAETITIA.

SATURN: His day sign is Aquarius. His night sign is Capricorn. He is a diurnal planet, and therefore prefers to be in Aquarius. Thus, TRISTITIA is stronger than CARCER.

The Moon and Sun figures are different, since they each rule only one sign. But geomancy accounts for this by giving a stronger figure and weaker figure to each of the Lights. Thus, FORTUNA MAJOR, the Rising Sun, is generally stronger than FORTUNA MINOR, the Setting Sun. And POPULUS, the Waxing Moon, is generally stronger than VIA, the Waning Moon.

MERCURY is in a category of his own because he can be both DIURNAL and NOCTURNAL at different times. His day sign is Gemini and his night sign is Virgo. But, he doesn't prefer either one, so we cannot really say whether ALBUS or CONJUNCTIO is the stronger. I suspect that, if we had to evaluate this for a real geomancy chart, we might look to see if ALBUS or CONJUNCTIO was in COMPANY with another figure of a different planet. For example, if ALBUS were in HOUSE 1 and RUBEUS were in HOUSE 2, giving CAPITAL and REVERSE COMPANY. ALBUS would probably take on the nocturnal nature of Mars and act in a nocturnal fashion. Because ALBUS is associated with the day sign of Mercury, ALBUS would probably not be happy in this situation.

Although I believe the above to be a more accurate description of the relative strength of the figures, compared to direct and retrograde motion, I hasten to add that I have never had occasion to use this when I am actually judging charts. Perhaps we will sometime have a chart where we have to "split hairs" down to this level, but, as I say, I have not yet encountered one in my experience.

comments
